Peninsula Velo’s Beat the Clock Success Fuels Bicycle Sunday Support in 2026

Peninsula Velo, a non-profit organization dedicated to racing, recreational riding, and bicycle advocacy in the San Francisco Bay Area, is leading the way with both their growing Beat the Clock time trial series and their commitment to supporting Bicycle Sunday. The club’s main focus is helping cyclists become better racers.

A Partnership Built on Community

Andrew Hsu, President of Peninsula Velo, reached out in late December with the good news that their club would be making another, larger donation in support of Bicycle Sunday due to the growing popularity of their Beat the Clock time trial series in 2025. The hope is that attendance for the 2026 series will be even greater than last year.

This generous donation reflects Peninsula Velo’s deep connection to the San Mateo County community. As Andrew explains, “Most members of Peninsula Velo live in San Mateo County. Many have families, so supporting Bicycle Sunday is a natural way for our club to show support for our community and help SMC Parks provide a scenic and safe location for bicyclists of all abilities to go for a ride. Peninsula Velo is proud to support San Mateo County’s most treasured bicycling event, available to everyone in the Bay Area (and beyond).”

Building on Success

The 2025 Beat the Clock series saw a noticeable increase in participation, and Peninsula Velo is building on that momentum for 2026. Their growing success demonstrates what many of us already know: cycling offers tremendous benefits for physical fitness and improved mental health. It also introduces people to a sustainable alternative to car travel for getting around town.

Discover Bicycle Sunday

If you haven’t experienced Bicycle Sunday yet, you’re in for a treat. This year-round event takes place along nearly four miles of Cañada Road, from Highway 92 to Filoli Gardens. Almost every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the road is closed to vehicles, giving cyclists, rollerbladers, and joggers free reign of this stunning stretch of pavement. Funding supports the presence of a San Mateo County Park Ranger to close the road to cars and be on site as a first responder. The event does not happen on 3-day holiday weekends due to increased park use in the 24 county parks which requires park rangers’ attention.

Regardless, whether you’re new to cycling and want a safe place to practice, or a seasoned rider looking for a gorgeous location to cruise, Cañada Road is the spot for you on all the other Sundays. With views of Crystal Springs Reservoir and the surrounding hills, you’re sure to start your Sunday off right with a little non-motorized exploration and exercise.

Why Cycling Matters

Beyond the pure joy of riding, cycling offers incredible benefits:

  • Physical Health: Great cardiovascular exercise that’s easy on the joints
  • Mental Wellness: Time outdoors and physical activity that clears the mind
  • Sustainable Transportation: A practical alternative to driving for many trips
  • Community Connection: Events like Bicycle Sunday bring people together

We’re grateful to Peninsula Velo for their support and leadership in promoting cycling in San Mateo County. Their donation helps ensure that Bicycle Sunday remains accessible and welcoming to everyone, from families with young children to experienced cyclists looking for a safe training ground.
