Parks Mural Program

In a collaboration between San Mateo County Parks Foundation, CompassPoint Mentorship, and the San Mateo County Parks Department, local youth created a vibrant mural series at Coyote Point Recreation Area as part of a three-week summer camp in 2025.

Dozens of youth ages 5-14 created stunning murals that wrap around the newer restroom building at the Coyote Point Eastern Promenade. Working alongside professional artists Xiangfei (Simon) Bai and Li Dongzhu, they designed four unique scenes celebrating Coyote Point’s diverse landscapes and wildlife. The artists collaborated with Parks Interpretive staff and Park Rangers as they advanced their mural concepts. These youth were participating in a CompassPoint Mentorship summer camp that drew kids from up and down the Peninsula from South San Francisco to Mountain View, with the majority coming from San Mateo and Foster City.

CompassPoint Mentorship champions diverse, equitable, and inclusive summer camps where every student feels a sense of belonging. Their mission is to help children around the world convert ideas into world-changing actions through education, mentorship, and leadership opportunities.

As part of this summer camp, young artists learned every step of the mural-making process—from design prep and outlining, to mixing sustainable paints with natural pigments, to techniques for painting at a large-scale. Visitors stopped by daily to watch the art come to life, and the finished murals bring a new element of delight and beauty to the park.

Stay tuned for our next mural project with CompassPoint Mentorship!
