Ohlone-Portolá Heritage Trail on OpenRoad with Doug McConnell

San Mateo County Parks Foundation is proud to be one of the underwriters for OpenRoad with Doug McConnell which airs Sundays at 6:30pm on NBC Bay Area.

In April 2019, OpenRoad focused an entire episode on the arrival of the first people of European heritage to the Bay Area and their profoundly consequential encounter with native Ohlone people.

In case you missed it, we have captured the video here. Follow the route of the first Europeans to lay eyes on San Francisco Bay, over 250 years ago. Learn about how a struggling Spanish expedition under the command of Gaspar de Portolá found sustenance and support from native Ohlone people.

This will be a significant year for us to remember and reflect on one of the most important and poignant moments in California history which foreshadowed a dramatic and swift transition from ancient ways to modern times.  Portolá’s path is in process of being developed as the 90-mile Ohlone-Portolá Heritage Trail. Half of this trail is already accessible to the public on existing trails across protected parks and open spaces.
