San Mateo County Parks Foundation, CompassPoint Mentorship and the San Mateo County Parks Department Celebrate a New Community Mural at Coyote Point with Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
45 Young Artists Transform Park Restroom Building into Vibrant Canvas Showcasing Local Natural Beauty
SAN MATEO, CA – September 6, 2025 – The San Mateo County Parks Foundation invites the community to celebrate the completion of a stunning new mural at Coyote Point Recreation Area this Saturday, September 6, at 9:30 a.m. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at the Eastern Promenade restroom building, where 45 young artists have transformed all four sides of the structure into a colorful tribute to the park’s natural landscape.
Under the guidance of two accomplished muralists, Simon Bai and Li Dongzhu, the student artists spent part of a three-week summer camp creating vibrant scenes that capture the essence of Coyote Point – from children flying kites, to windsurfers navigating the bay near the eucalyptus knoll, to detailed depictions of wetland birds that call the area home. The collaborative artwork serves as both a beautiful addition to the park and a celebration of youth creativity in the community.
Parks Director Nicholas Calderon states, “The mural spotlights what Coyote Point is known for – the calm and beauty of the bay and the vibrancy of both animal and human activity. I appreciate the Parks Foundation, CompassPoint Mentorship, and artists coming together to create an amazing work of art that will be enjoyed by the more than 500,000 visitors that come here each year.”
The youth, ranging in age from 5 to 14, hail from up and down the Peninsula, with the majority coming from San Mateo and Foster City. “This mural reflects six months of collaboration, where ideas from San Mateo County Parks staff were transformed into a vibrant design by our youth leaders, made possible through the support of the San Mateo County Parks Foundation and the spirit of community collaboration that brings new beauty to the park,” adds Catherine Liu, Executive Director of CompassPoint Mentorship.
The San Mateo County Park Foundation is keen to support creative ways of engaging people in their county parks. “Our goal is to promote good health, well-being, and joy through meaningful connections to San Mateo County Parks. Parks are good for our physical, mental, and emotional health and we want people to feel welcome in and enjoy the benefits of time well-spent in nature,” shares Michele Beasley, Executive Director of the San Mateo County Parks Foundation.
The public is invited to attend the ribbon-cutting ceremony to meet the artists and view the completed mural. Light refreshments will be provided.
