Ohlone Day: Ribbon Cutting for Sanchez Adobe Interpretive Center

On October 26, 2019, the San Mateo County Historical Association will join with San Mateo County officials to celebrate a new interpretive center at the Sanchez Adobe Historic Site.  The day’s activities will be highlighted by special salutes to the first people who lived at the site, the Aramai of the Ramaytush Ohlone village of Pruristac. Ohlone Demonstrations 10:30 a.m. - 12:15 p.m. Visit with Ohlone basketweaver, Linda Yamane, as she displays her work and demonstrates the making of a twined basket used for gathering and winnowing. See a variety of Ohlone baskets, both fancy and functional, and the plants from which they’re made. Isaac Bojorquez is the Tribal Chairman of the KaKoon Ta Ruk Band of Ohlone-Costanoan Indians, and will be showing guests how clapper sticks were an important part of the lives of Ohlone people. Kanyon CoyoteWoman Sayers-Roods offers a conversation about the Indigenous people of the Bay area and what it means to #HonorNativeLand and acknowledge the land in today's post colonial settler society. Ribbon Cutting 12:30 p.m. At 12:30 p.m. will be the ribbon cutting with participation from the County Board of Supervisors, who are the major sponsors of the interpretive center.  Supervisors Carole Groom and Don Horsley will represent the County. …

What’s up in the evening sky that can be seen with the unaided eye or with just a pair of binoculars? Amateur astronomer Bing Quock will give us a tour of the heavens, including seasonal constellations, notable deep-sky objects, & a sneak peek at a few upcoming events, including meteor showers, interesting configurations of the Moon & planets, and a rare transit of Mercury across the Sun that won’t be seen again until 2032. Interested in purchasing a telescope for yourself or as a gift? What are some recommendations and affordable resources? We’ll explore the heavenly hobby of stargazing; be there on Saturday, Oct 26, at 4pm. Bing Quock is a long-time amateur astronomer, having been bitten by the astro-bug while growing up during the height of the Space Race. Drawn away (but not completely) from dinosaurs to the science of the stars by the writings of Patrick Moore & Carl Sagan, he parlayed his childhood interest into a career, having since taught astronomy courses at both the informal & college levels. He is currently Assistant Director of Morrison Planetarium at the Cal Academy of Sciences. He’s a frequent interviewee on local media, explaining astronomical events, & writes daily sky watching tips that appear in over 30 newspapers…
